What It Really Means to Live by Faith

What do you rely on most in life? Your paycheck? Your savings account? Your job security?

The Bible says, “the just shall live by faith”. (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17, Hebrews 10:38). But if we’re honest, most of us live by sight. We depend on what we can see, measure, or count in our hands.

Yet God calls us to something greater. And that’s why one of the most misunderstood teachings in all of Christianity needs to be revisited: what it really means to live by faith.

What Living by Faith Is Not

Living by faith does not mean trusting in money, possessions, or visible resources. Anyone can do that.

Scripture says plainly, “we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7) That means faith goes beyond what’s visible. It calls us to trust God even when the outcome is hidden, or when we can’t see how things will work out.

If you take nothing else from this, remember this truth: trusting in what you see is not faith.

What Living by Faith Looks Like

To understand true faith, let’s turn to the words of Jesus in Matthew 6.

He said that unbelievers — “the Gentiles” — spend their lives worrying about food, clothing, and material needs. But Jesus told His followers not to worry about such things, because our heavenly Father already knows what we need.

Instead, He gave us a radical command: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you”. (Matthew 6:33)

Even more, Jesus warned us that we cannot serve two masters: God and money. We will love one and despise the other, but we cannot cling to both.

Examples of Faith in Action

This principle is woven throughout the Bible:

  • Abraham left his homeland with no map, only God’s promise. (Genesis 12:1, 4)
  • Noah built an ark long before a single raindrop fell. (Genesis 6:13-14, 22)
  • Israel walked through the wilderness, living day by day on bread from heaven. (Exodus 16)
  • The disciples left their jobs, homes, and possessions to follow Jesus, trusting God for provision. (Luke 5:2-11, 18:28-30)

Over and over, we see it: living by faith means hearing God, obeying Him, and trusting Him to provide — even when we don’t see how.

The Call Still Stands

The God who called Abraham, Noah, and the first disciples is still calling His people today. He calls us to live by faith, right here, right now.

So the question is simple, but searching: between God and money, which do you trust?

Take a moment. Let that question sink in.

A Personal Word

My wife and I have been learning to live by faith for over two decades combined. Time after time, we’ve seen God provide in ways we couldn’t predict. We’ve also watched friends who have walked this path even longer experience the same.

Living by faith is not theory. It is reality for those who step out and trust.

What You Can Do Now

These are unprecedented times. If we want to survive spiritually — not just physically — we must learn to live by faith, not by sight.

So I encourage you:

  • Pray. Ask God what He wants you to do with the time you’ve been given.
  • Seek His kingdom first.
  • Decide today whom you will serve: God, or money.

The choice will shape your heart, your future, and your eternity. Choose wisely.
